After hiring a research agency, interviewing hundreds of Plated customers and being insanely close to the food trends that have come by: I realized that we needed to modernize.

The thing about food photography is that most of it looks the same. Farm-to-table inspired shots. Rustic. Wooden tables. All been done to death. The world of Pinterest is overly saturated with the same shots, over and over.

What I wanted to do was to utilize what was working for us; take that rustic nostalgic table and turn it into something new, modernize it, but not eliminate it, tweak it, push it, but don’t replace it. By pulling in inspiration from our favorite brands like Kinfolk, Food52 and Sunday Suppers, we set out on a mission to modernize food photography.
